Tackle Tips

Dial in your gear for walleye and northern pike with these proven tackle recommendations.

Walleye Tackle Setup

For walleye, light to medium spinning gear is ideal. Jig heads tipped with soft plastics or frozen minnows are a go-to, especially in 1/8–3/8 oz sizes. Lindy rigs, spinner rigs, and shallow-running crankbaits work great when covering water. Use 6–10 lb line for better sensitivity and a natural presentation.

Northern Pike Tackle Setup

For northern pike, step up to medium-heavy or heavy tackle with a sturdy rod and reel. Spoons, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and large crankbaits are top producers. Wire or heavy fluorocarbon leaders are strongly recommended to prevent bite-offs. Use 12–20 lb line to handle aggressive strikes and powerful runs.
