What a season it has been!!

First of all I’d like to thank all the guests that came up to the lodge and outposts this year. It was not a normal season with many many forest fires spread across Manitoba and also right in our area. I’d also like to thank all the fire fighters and support crews that have fought diligently to keep our properties safe, it is a thankless job that requires a lot of effort and for that we appreciate you all. As we wrap up the 2025 season with our last week of guests in camp, we welcome new guests to join us in the 2026 season for some great fishing and friendship. Call us today to inquire on your preferred dates & cabin locations. We will do our best to fit you in where we can. As for our past guests we appreciate your continued re bookings year after year! your commitment to this great annual fishing trip tradition is what keeps the fire burning, we look forward to seeing all of you again. Unfortunately our Carroll lake outpost did not make it through the forest fire this season. It was a hard battle fought to keep it safe but wind and weather got the best of it. On the plus side we do have plans on rebuilding next season and the guests that love to fish Carroll will have a beautiful new cabin ready for the fall of 2026. Please have a happy hard water season and we will see you all in the new year! The season is well underway!

Here we are folks! well underway into the 2023 fishing season. Everything wintered well at the camp this year and opening went flawlessly. Ice out on all the lakes was May 2nd and followed with some cooler weather for a couple weeks. At this moment the weather has been unseasonably hot with daytime highs reaching the mid 80’s. The fishing has been excellent! Walleye spawn is now over and the water temps are coming up to about 72 degrees with strong fishing action. As per usual a jig with frozen minnow is all you need for catching walleye. Any type of spoon, spinner or floating bait will produce intense pike action. We are excited to have some bear hunters this spring. All the sites are baited and producing lots of nice boars. Our hunters arrive today so it should be a fun week of hunting and fishing. We have a few additions to the camps this year to make your stay even more enjoyable… Carroll lake outpost has plumbed water down to the filleting station with a spray nozzle for easy cleanup. Gammon river outpost is getting a new solar system for indoor lights Wallace lake lodge added another rental boat to it’s fleet with a total of 5 boats available Wallace lake lodge also added a wood fired hot tub for guests to use during their stay All in all we are excited for this season and look forward to seeing our returning and new guests. If you are looking for a trip this year please send us an email or give us a call as we have openings throughout the year that we would be able to accommodate you. All the best! 2023 is right around the corner!

This winter we will be doing  some sport shows to promote our operation. These are the sportshows we will be attending for the winter of 2023 Manitoba Ag days- Brandon, MB Jan 18-20 Manitoba Outdoors show- Winnipeg, MB Feb 3-5 Fargo sportsmen show- Fargo, ND March 2-5 Toronto Sportsmen show- Toronto, ON March 16-19   Best of luck to all the ice fishers this year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Joe, James, Paul Hnatishin & Family.

Welcome to the 2022 season!!!

Welcome to our 2022 fishing season here at Wallace Lake Lodge & Outposts! After 2 years of covid restrictions, we are pleased to say that we are now operating at full capacity and happy to host people from across the map. We look forward to seeing all our returning guests and meeting all the new ones that are joining us this season. What would the beginning of a season be without a few challenges, right? Late ice out, extremely high water levels, damaged docks and frozen water lines are only a few of the difficulties that we’ve come across. Luckily we haven’t had to postpone any trips and everything is operating as scheduled. There are a couple new additions to the lodge and outposts this season to make your vacation more enjoyable and comfortable. At the main lodge we now have kayaks in addition to the peddle boat for complimentary use with your cabin rental. Great to keep the kids busy or for the adults to take a leisurely paddle around the bay. At Gammon river outpost we have put together a solar system with on demand water pump. This set up will make it simpler to have comfortable hot and cold running water in the cabin for convenience. Of course we are always continuing to improve things to make your stay more comfortable at all the camps. Now for the current fishing report! With late ice out on May 12th the spawn was a bit later this year, but with report from the fishing crews on all lakes the walleye and pike are spawned out already at this point (June 2) and fishing has been ramping up. Current water temp of Wallace lake and outpost lakes are 59.3 deg. F Biggest walleye to date has been caught and released at Carroll lake measuring in at 27″ All other groups have reported great numbers of fish caught during each trip. Still some room for the last minute trip planners! Although this season is pretty busy, we still have some room for those last minute planners, Let us know of your interest and we will get you out on a memorable vacation! drop us a line at 204-755-3473 or shoot us an email info@wallacelakelodge.com All the best this summer and keep those lines tight! -The Wallace Lake Lodge Team   (Pictured are Darryl & Tommy at the Wallace lake rapids – Joe & Cass’s kids)

Family fishing trip one for the memory banks

Over the last number of years, our family has always tried to plan one fishing adventure a year. This summer I offered them several options, including a fly-in fishing trip. When the vote was tallied, everyone wanted to experience being in a place more remote. My son Kristjan was the only one who had been on a fly-in before.
I talked to friend Joe Hnatishin who runs Wallace Lake Lodge and Outposts if there was something available. For years I had wanted to return to Carroll Lake, which is located on the Gammon River system. Joe, along with his brother and their father James, had built a new outpost cabin there a few years ago. They constructed the log cabin from wood that was available in the forest around them. This impressive structure also included a hardwood floor. As luck would have it, in a year with COVID-19 stopping U.S clientele, the cabin was open for the August long weekend. I quickly booked the trip and started planning.
Carroll Lake is located within Woodland Caribou Provincial Park. It lies within the Nelson River drainage basin, which is part of the Arctic Watershed. All water flows westward into Lake Winnipeg and the Nelson River, then eventually north to Hudson Bay. The many waterways and lakes are a mecca for those who like to trace the steps of fur traders who lived here, and First Nations people from this part of the world. There are more than 2,500 kilometres of waterway to paddle if you include Atikaki Provincial Park, located in Manitoba. Carroll lake supplies anglers with an incredible diversity of structure and places to wet a line. It would be easy to get lost if you didn’t take special note of direction. Luckily for us we made sure each boat was equipped with electronics that included GPS tracking. My Helix 5 is perfect for a fly-in trip, especially rigged with a Lithium 7-amp battery. It is lightweight and loaded with a zero lines card that also shows the outline of the lake you are fishing. Don’t rely too much on this though — the map we had of Carroll on the chart was totally off. With the fear of getting lost behind us we spent a wonderful three days exploring the myriad bays, narrows and islands. One of the highlights of the trip occurred the second morning when my son Kristjan spotted a young woodland caribou running along the shoreline near us. It was exciting to see how beautiful this animal was. Unfortunately, we didn’t get close enough to get a picture of this rare sighting. On the first couple of days of our trip we got rained on a few times. The first two times we did not have our rain gear in the boat. That made finding dry clothes a bit of a chore, but we never left home without after that. How was the fishing? I would put it as interesting. We didn’t really find the walleye in spots that you would consider middle-of-the-summer areas. They were not stacked up on deep reefs or points. They did move into necked down current areas in the evening and supplied some incredible action. The biggest walleye of the trip measured in at 66 centimetres. This was caught by my daughter’s partner Brodie Green. He has a habit of catching big fish and this walleye was no exception He also caught the biggest pike on the trip. We did spend some time trying to catch a large pike with limited success. Funny thing, it helped us fine-tune the walleye fishing. On the third morning we were in a large bay casting for pike when I spotted several marks on my Helix 5 that looked like walleye. These fish were in three metres of water off a deep cabbage patch. I quickly grabbed my walleye rod rigged with a jig and Berkley flatnose minnow. Bam, fish on. After that it was non-stop action for a half-hour. I spent most of it netting walleye for my wife and son. It was the best action of the trip and we ended up catching a pile of fish all day long. While the Carroll Lake outpost is on the Manitoba side of the border, most of the lake itself lies in Ontario. This requires both Manitoba and Ontario licences depending on where you fish. Ontario Conservation licences, which we had, allow you to keep two walleye smaller that 46 centimetres. During our time there we had two meals of fish and the biggest hit of the weekend was when we made fish tacos. My wife Thora whipped up fresh pineapple salsa, guacamole, cabbage, along with a yogurt, lemon, sour cream sauce to go with it.

ANGLER NOTES:

We flew into the lodge from Bissett with Bluewater Aviation. This airline has a fleet of Otter aircraft that makes the journey an extremely enjoyable process. It is only a 15-minute flight to get to the lake and we were able to take a lot of gear on this workhorse. If you have never gone to a remote outpost, it is an experience you will never forget. Go with family and friends and spend some special time together. Manitoba has some of the best lodges in the world. It’s time to give them a try. dlamont46@gmail.com

An opportunity of a lifetime!

Late June Fishing Report

Wow! What a start to the season it has been. The fishing has been incredible this past month with many walleye and northern caught in all the lakes. Quite a few trophy fish have been landed as well.

Water levels are slowly on the decline as we haven’t had much for precipitation but they are still good for travelling to any point of the lakes. I believe the last water temperature reading has been about 68 degrees F.

Carroll lake outpost has been the leader so far for biggest walleye measuring in at 30.5 inches long.

Craven lake outpost has the leading Northern pike so far at 46.5 inches long.

Both sets of rapids at the Gammon river outpost have been producing lots of fish with some northerns in the low 40″ range and many many eating size walleyes.

Obukowin has really been a gem to fish this month with crazy amounts of walleye to catch in average depths of only 3-4 feet! Basically find any reef or sunken island and be prepared to catch a ton of fish.

Wallace lake has been very very good fishing so far. Many groups having no problem limiting out for dinner well before the 10 AM coffee time bell. Siderock lake has been decent access for the month but I think the weeds will make it tough to travel in the next couple weeks. (book early in the season for 2020 to have this option)

There are still spots available yet for this season & some specials during July and August so don’t hesitate to call for more info! 1-204-755-3473

That’s all for now folks, Hope to see you out at camp!

Spring fishing is almost here!

With spring sloooowwwwly creeping around the corner it makes us excited for the upcoming fishing season! At this date (April 5th) we are still a little ways from having an early ice out judging by the cool temperatures in the upcoming forecast. Looks like lake levels will probably be higher than normal this spring due to the amount of snow in the bush and the spring run off. This is good news since we’ve been experiencing below average water levels in the previous years. After taking the Super cub on skis up to the camps this late winter, it looks like everything is wintering well and we can’t wait to see the places again once the ice breaks. With that is mind it is not too late to to reserve your stay in the 2019 season! We can accommodate any group size from 4- 16 guests in a fly in outpost experience or a drive in lodge setting. Just let us know what dates work for you and we can help cure that fishing bug, at any one of our awesome locations! To all the guests that are booked with us already this year, we look forward to seeing you all in the next months to come.
